Signs Lesions appear on the leaves of rice plants and vary in size. They are usually diamond shaped and have a gray or white center with a brown or reddish-brown border. Crop loss of 50-90% has been reported. Lesions also appear on the rice head but are brown or black in color. Rice grains do not develop properly. In severe neck infections, the stem will break and the head will drop off. The fungus can infect the roots and also invade the plant s vascular system blocking the transport of nutrients and water from the roots. ...

The pons and cerebellum (metencephalon) form the middle portion of the brain stem, bordered rostrally by the midbrain and caudally by the medulla. It also contains a portion of the brain stem and several nuclei important to arousal and sleep. The cerebellum branches off of the back of the brain stem. It has a cortical surface and deep nuclei imbedded in white matter. Through its connections, it has involvement in diverse functions including balance, fine motor coordination, and even cognition.

The kidney brush border also possesses a carnosine transport system and there is evidence that kidney also contains an active carnosinase (Sauerhoefer et al., 2005). There is also evidence that carnosine can influence sympathetic nervous activity in kidney (Tanida et al., 2005) as well as brown (Tanida et al., 2007) and white adipose tissue (Shen et al., 2008). Other studies have shown that carnosine has antidepressant activity in rats (Tomonaga et al., 2008). In chicks, carnosine induces hyperactivity (Tsuneyoshi et al., 2007) whereas its reverse structure (L-histidinyl-13-alanine) has sedative and hypnotic effects (Tsuneyoshi et al., 2008). The mechanisms involved in remain obscure however.
