Bone morphogenic growth proteins

Polyanions have yielded different effects on the solubility of proteins with high pi. Polyanions such as sulfated polysaccharides have limited effects on the solubility of basic fibroblast growth factor, a protein with a high pi, since specific interactions yield reversible precipitates containing bioactive and native protein (Sommer and Rifkin, 1989 Shahrokh et ah, 1994). By contrast, sulfated polysaccharides were most effective in enhancing the solubility of bone morphogenic protein, a very low solubility, high pi protein (Zhu, 1999). [Pg.350]

Bone morphogenic proteins (BMPs) represent another interesting class of biophar-maceutical (Table 9). As their name suggests, these proteins can promote the deposition and growth of new bone, and are... [Pg.40]

It should be noted that quite recently, the first two agents that can effect bone growth have appeared on the market Novos (bone morphogenic protein 7) in Australia in 2001 and InFuse (bone mor-... [Pg.464]

Growth factors bind to receptors on the cell surface and subsequently activate cellular proliferation or differentiation. Many growth factors stimulate cellular division in numerous cell type, whereas others are specific to particular cell types. They often promote cell differentiation and maturation, whereas varies between growth factors. For example, bone morphogenic proteins stimulate bone cell differentiation, whereas vascular endothelial growth factors stimulate blood vessel differentiation. [Pg.1198]
