Bombs Improvised explosive

Sensors and actuators can be used for the detection and signalling (light, sound, haptic feedback) of threats such as bombs, improvised explosive devices (lEDs), mortars, toxic gases or even unexpected attacks from enemies (Chapman, 2012). The sensors and actuators can be integrated into military uniforms, accessories or vehicles and linked to the warning systems. [Pg.245]

It should be noted that the use of chlorate has not been limited to Bali. Two more attacks using chlorate-based improvised explosives occurred in Indonesia followed the Bali bombing. On August 5, 2003, the J.W. Marriott hotel was bombed in Jakarta. In an even bolder attack the Australian Embassy in Jakarta was bombed on September 9, 2004. This continued reliance on a highly sensitive main charge in Indonesia illustrates that terrorists will utilize whatever tools are at their disposal regardless of the risks. [Pg.66]

Recently, the topic of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) has garnered a lot of attention. IEDs may take the form of roadside bombs, suicide bombers, or vehicle-borne bombs. Roadside bombs share some detection issues with land mines, and in principle, the NQR land mine detectors discussed in the previous section can be used to detect roadside IEDs. However, many IEDs are remotely controlled, and the short standoff distance available with NQR makes IED detection dangerous for the NQR operator. The personnel screening devices already discussed in Section 5.2.3. are applicable to the suicide bomber. [Pg.192]

Yes. There s an incident in the film where there was a double VBIED, which stands for Vehicle-Bome Improvised Explosive Device (lED)—a word for a car bomb, basically. And there was a double VBIED outside the gates of Taji as Steve Pink s crew was getting ready to go out on a mission, and they responded to the call. [Pg.333]

Domestic bombings are characteristically accomplished by utilizing improvised low-yield explosives. An example of a low-yield explosive is black powder. [Pg.268]

Last year, the squad raided an Escondido house after a 17-year-oId boy blew himself up with homemade explosives. Ten pipe bombs and a how-to text titled "Improvised Munitions Slack Book" were found. [Pg.19]

Detonation of an improvised or stolen nnclear weapon by terrorists is the worst-case radiological attack scenario (5). Althongh difficnlt to construct, due to requirements for sophisticated engineering and expertise, an improvised nuclear device could produce a yield similar to the Hiroshima bomb, with release or radiation, blast, thermal pulses, and radioactive fallout (1). At a minimum, a small nuclear detonation could cause damage equal or exceeding the September 11 attacks in New York City. Even if the nuclear detonation were unsuccessful, the conventional explosion associated with the device could cause significant environmental contamination with the nuclear weapons material, such as plutonium or uranium (1). [Pg.163]

Low-order explosive mixtures made from commonly available chemicals have been termed improvised mixtures. The majority of the improvised mixtures used in criminal bombings in this country fall into two categories homemade black powder and homemade flash powders. These mixtures usually are confined in some container, such as a section of capped pipe, and initiated with an external burning pyrotechnic or homemade fuse. Homemade black powder is a mixture of potassium nitrate, sulfur, and charcoal. It is usually poorly made, and unconsumed particles are abundant in the bomb debris. The components of this mixture can be identified chemically using techniques described previously. [Pg.580]
