Uses of Plutonium. The fissile isotope Pu had its first use in fission weapons, beginning with the Trinity test at Alamogordo, New Mexico, on July 16, 1945, followed soon thereafter by the "Litde Boy" bomb dropped on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. Its weapons use was extended as triggers for thermonuclear weapons. This isotope is produced in and consumed as fuel in breeder reactors. The short-Hved isotope Tu has been used in radioisotope electrical generators in unmanned space sateUites, lunar and interplanetary spaceships, heart pacemakers, and (as Tu—Be alloy) neutron sources (23). [Pg.193]

The British had proceeded less expeditiously. The Chiefs of Staff advised in October 1945 that the best defence against atomic bombs was likely to be the deterrent effect that the possession of the means of retaliation would have on a potential aggressor, and in January 1946 they said that a stock in the order of hundreds rather than scores would be necessary to deter a country with widely dispersed industries and population (like the Soviet Union). In December 1945, ministers in the Gen 75 committee approved the construction of the first reactor capable of producing plutonium, and in August 1946 the CAS sent the first requisition for an atomic bomb to the Ministry of Supply. The McMahon Act was amended in October 1950 to allow rather more cooperation between American and British scientists but the first British test did not take place until 3 October 1952, in the hold of a ship off Australia. The first test of a British atomic bomb dropped by an aircraft did not occur until 11 October 1956. [Pg.236]

The first atomic bomb was tested at an isolated desert location in New Mexico on July 16,1945. President Truman then issued an ultimatum to Japan that a powerful new weapon could soon be used against them. On August 8, a single atomic bomb destroyed the city of Hiroshima with over 80,000 casualties. On August 11, a second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki with a similar result. The classic experiment is to repeatedly paint a test substance on the back of a mouse and look for development of both local and systemic tumors in the animal.
