Boiler surface combination

Equally, boiler surface failure may result solely from poor operational practices or other indirect problems, although more usually it is due to a combination of waterside and operational problems such as corrosion fatigue and other stress corrosion cracking (SCC) mechanisms. 

In fire-tube furnaces developed in the nineteenth century, such as typified by the Scotch-Marine boiler (Fig. 1), thin currents of water contact a multiplicity of tubes thus, the hot gases transmit heat simultaneously to all regions of the bulk of the water. Modern SM boilers are widely used for hydronic heating, LP steam applications, and some HP processes. They are available in forced-draft gas, oil, and combination fuel modes, typically producing up to 1,200 hp (41,400 lb/hr). U.S. manufacturers today build to a 5 sq ft of heating surface per hp standard (6,700 Btu/hr/sq ft). 

Where direct addition to the boiler is possible, use a combined phos-phate-chelant program because solubilization of hardness salts will occur this limits the potential for adherence to metal surfaces. 

Reaction 8.28 is endothermic and 8.29 exothermic, and the combination is almost thermoneutral (AH 0). Since the combustion temperature is lower than in traditional boiler designs, less NO is emitted, and the ash does not melt and so cannot foul the heat transfer surfaces. 

Ever since the discovery of the steam engine, the precipitation of insoluble calcium salts in boilers and pipes has been causing severe problems. Thus, the discovery that low concentrations of phosphoric, pyrophosphoric or bisphosphonic acids can prevent scale had enormous industrial importance. This information, combined with the characteristic ability of BPs to chelate virtually every heavy metal, laid the basis for their wide industrial importance [4], As a result, bisphosphonates are in current use in a wide variety of industrial areas, as scale inhibitors, for the treatment of metal and other surfaces, in water treatment, in the textile industry, in the detergent and cosmetic industry, in the polymer industry, and several others [4],... 

High boiler efficiency is always the result of optimal combination of design and operating criteria, including enough heating surface and passes, good burner-boiler compatibility, reliability of combustion controls and safety, as well as cost-effective implementation of advanced waste heat recovery techniques. 

Under certain corrosive conditions, many metals form covering layers. If these are sufficiently dense, they act as protective films against the corrosive removal of the material. An example of this is the protective layer of iron oxide formed in unalloyed or low-alloy boiler tubes. Corrosion with erosion is understood as the combined action of mechanical surface removal and corrosion. With some soft and loose layers, the shear forces obtained with pure flowing liqnids at medium flow velocities are sufficient to damage the protective layer without the involvement of abrasive solid particles. Where drop impingement or cavitation is involved, the mechanical removal of material is understandable.
