Coals are also divided into two types based on their macroscopic appearance banded and non-banded. Non-banded coals include cannel and boghead coals, both of which are dull and blocky. 

Bone" and "bone coals" have a high ash content in the form of clays and silts they form part of a continuum between dark shale and dull (banded or non-banded) coal in the following sequence dark shale, bone (greater than 50% ash), boney coal (less than 50%), dull coal (cannel, boghead, or splint).

Subsequently, Dr. Fyfe also made an extended scries of experiments on the same subject, confining his attention, however, to the Boghead cannel, which, he justly remarks, is best fitted for testing the value of the hydrocarbon process. His results differ most widely from Feans la Nil s, exhibiting invariably a loss of light—sometimes small, at other times enormously great—by tfta application of the hydrocarbon process. 

Having previously ascertained that Boghead cannel, when distilled alone, yields considerably higher results in small quantities, and being desirous of placing the cannel in the best possible position for a comparison. 

The two principal points, in which the conclusions drawn by Dr, Fite from these results differ from Fkankiand s, are—first, his high estimate of the powers of the Boghead cancel distilled alone and, secondly, the comparatively low results which he obtained by the collateral use of water gas. The first of these points arises, us just mentioned, from reliance being placed upon certain results obtained in small retorts with seven pound charges of cannel, which results differ most widely from those of all other experiments, os also from the previously published report of Dr, Fyee himself.

Classification by type differentiates the coals accdg to the proportion of various plant ingredients and accdg to appearance. Standard types used in US include common banded, splint, cannel and boghead coals.
