Psyllium Hydrophilic Mucciloid. Metamucil, or psyllium hydrophilic mucciloid, is a white-to-cream colored, slightly granular powder having Htde or no odor and a slightly acidic taste. It is made from the mucilagiaous portion, ie, outer epidermis, of blond psylHum seeds (Plantago ovatd). 

If lighter colors than these are desired it is necessary to decolorize all the melanin in the hair in a preliminary step, and then add color back to the desired depth in a second treatment. This is known as a double-process treatment. The decolorization step consists of treating the hair with an alkaline mixture of persulfate salts and peroxide. The persulfate is added to the peroxide as a dry powder immediately before applying to the hair. Although the persulfate salts alone do not have any bleaching effect, the persulfate—peroxide mixture can remove all the melanin in the hair. Dark brown or darker hair can be lightened to a light blonde shade in about an hour. 

After the hair is bleached it has an uimatural straw-like color and is then dyed to the desired tone with either a semipermanent or a permanent hair color product. The dye products designed to color bleached hair to a natural looking blonde shade are called toners.

Although the difference between toners and tinted sealers may not be clearly defined, it is usually the role of the tinted sealer to provide both color and sealing properties. Therefore the tinted sealer usually is higher in soHds and provides the majority of color to the finish. There has been a resurgence of popularity of tinted sealers, owing to the appeal of blonde or natural finishes. The fact that tinted sealers are becoming more popular maybe the result in part of their abiHty to fiU the roles of both stain and film builder within a finishing system. 

In hair coloring a light ash blond shade may require as Httie as 0.5—1% of intermediates, whereas a tme black may require up to about 5%. In principle, the formulator blends precursors that yield red, blue, and yellow dyes. The base in which the components are dissolved or suspended is similar to that used in simple bleaches and may include alkanolamides, various types of surfactants, thickening agents, and solvents. Removal of undesirable dyes is achieved by treating the discolored hair with a powerful reductant of the sulfite family.

The actual genesis of the odoriferous compounds in the living plant has been studied, as indicated above, principally by Charabot and his colleagues, Laloue and Hebert, but interesting work in the same direction has been carried out by Blonde and by Mesnard.

There are six Fitzpatrick skin types Type I skin always burns and never tans, type II skin burns easily and tans rarely, type III skin burns sometimes and tans usually, type IV skin burns rarely and always tans, type V skin always tans and is moderately pigmented (brown), and type VI skin always tans and is darkly pigmented (black). Fitzpatrick I and II skin types are commonly affected by NMSC and MM. The susceptibility to skin cancer, both NMSC and MM, is related to the melanin content of the skin and the skin s response to UV radiation.
