Because of their unique blend of properties, composites reinforced with high performance carbon fibers find use in many structural applications. However, it is possible to produce carbon fibers with very different properties, depending on the precursor used and processing conditions employed. Commercially, continuous high performance carbon fibers currently are formed from two precursor fibers, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and mesophase pitch. The PAN-based carbon fiber dominates the ultra-high strength, high temperature fiber market (and represents about 90% of the total carbon fiber production), while the mesophase pitch fibers can achieve stiffnesses and thermal conductivities unsurpassed by any other continuous fiber. This chapter compares the processes, structures, and properties of these two classes of fibers. [Pg.119]

PVC resin, plasticizers, and additives are weighed according to the recipe and mixed in a high-speed mixer. This mixture is then processed at 140-I80°C for a certain period of time to form the preplasticized PVC. The TPU is then added and further blending is performed until completion, depending on each case. [Pg.142]

Characterization and control of interfaces in the incompatible polymer blends were reported by Fayt et al. [23]. They used techniques such as electron microscopy, thermal transition analysis, and nonradiative energy transfer (NRET), etc. They have illustrated the exciting potentialities offered by diblock copolymers in high-performance polymer blends. [Pg.640]

HPLC. Is it high-performance liquid chromatography or high-pressure liquid chromatography or something else It s probably easier to consider it a delicate blend of wet-column chromatography and gas chromatography (see Chapters 20 and 24, respectively). [Pg.242]

On the other hand, silicones are used in organic composites. The application of alloys composed of the fully cured silicone rubber particles in a continuous thermoplastic phase, called thermoplastic silicone vulcanizate, which offers high-performance materials, has been reported.506,507 Functionalized POSS was not only co-polymerized, but also blended with poly(methylmethacrylate) to study the effect of silsesquioxanes on the thermal stability of thermoplastics.508... [Pg.679]
