Bleaching of polyester

A single stage combined scouring and bleaching of polyester/cotton blended fabric can also be done for economy. There are various approaches which include alkali treatment with detergent and peroxide hot bleach alkali treatment with detergent and sodium chlorite bleach sodium chlorite and peroxide bleach and peroxide cold and peroxide hot bleach.

Bleach stabilizer that is effective in acid mediums. Allows bleaching of cotton and dyeing of polyester in same bath. 

Polyester/silk blends can be bleached by a similar manner to that of polyester/ wool blends.

Kalliala and Nousiainen (1999) have studied LCA of hotel textiles, which include bed sheets, towels, etc. They have compared the life cycle of bed sheets made of 100% cotton and 50/50 polyester/cotton blend. Five plain woven fabrics, two polyester fabrics, and three cotton fabrics were examined in a yam pullout test, as schematically shown in (Figure 1(a)). Characteristics of these fabrics are presented in (Table 2). Sample PETl is consisted of twisted multi filaments of polyester as weft and warp yams. Sample PET2 has intermingled polyester multi filaments as warp and textured polyester multi filaments as weft yams. The COTl is a scoured cotton fabric with ringspun yams as wefts and warps. The COT2 is a bleached cotton fabric with ringspun weft and warp yams, and finally COTS is a bleached cotton fabric with open-end spun wefts and warps. 

It has also been reported that spent dyebath water can be re-used by decolouri-sation with ozone. Such decolourised liquors could be successfully used in the dyeing of polyester. The dyeing of cotton fabric with reactive dyes can be carried out using a modified dyeing method. Ozonated dyebaths can be re-used for the bleaching of cotton fabric and even for fabric whitening and rinsing, provided the effluent is extensively decolourised.

Other fibers blended with polyesters in numerous blended fabrics requke alternative methods of preparation. Generally, the scouring and bleaching procedures used for these blends are those employed for the primary component of the blended fiber or for the component that most influences aesthetic appearance.
