Blast gates

Balancing The process of obtaining the design airflow in hoods and ductwork by the use of static pressure balancing or blast gates. In the case of a liquid it is achieved by means of balancing valves.

Bursters from 155-mm, M110 mustard agent projectiles are transferred by the PMD burster transfer conveyor to the burster size-reduction machine. This is a baseline-system rocket shear machine (RSM) modified to perform burster size reduction. The M6 bursters from these projectiles are cut into three equal-length sections to reduce the time required to separate/deactivate the tetrytol explosive in the COINS. From the burster size-reduction machine, the burster sections drop into the projectile component discharge hopper, through double blast gates, to the projectile component discharge chute... 

Ensuring process safety is the prime concern of the design and operation of the TOCDF. Explosion-containment requirements were mentioned in several of the preceding sections. The overall design for ex-plosion-containment rooms requires containment of a blast from 15 pounds of TNT. The DFS room is designed to contain a blast from 28.2 pounds of TNT. Interlocked blast gates and blast doors are used to ensure containment. 

Dust usually results when solids are conveyed or transferred. High-velocity solids streams produce large movements of air. Suspended dust can be carried long distances, and so dust containment and collection systems are necessary. Collection systems require sufficient air velocity to capture particles and avoid settling and plugging. Air flow can be balanced by air inlet dampers and blast gates. 

Some ovens are set with one central exhaust flue, whereas others may be designed to have ports at both the tunnel entrance and exit. A dedicated manometer or other vent sensor should be installed in each exhaust line to monitor setup and routine exhaust performance. Blast gates in the exhaust line permit flow adjustment. It is customary to mount vent sensors after the flow damping device. Follow oven manufacturer s guidelines for exhaust requirements. Since the exhaust gases are laden with volatile materials, mostly from the solder paste, active exhaust systems should be checked routinely for performance. Impeller blades can foul...

S.R. Divine took out patents for Sprengel expls consisting of K chlorate liquid combustibles. One of such expl, Rackarock, was used in 1885 for blasting of Hell Gate in New York Harbor (Ref 11, p 43)... 

Vulcan Dynamite. Nineteenth century formulation patented in the USA by Warren contg NG 30.0, Na nitrate 52.5, S 7.0 and charcoal 10.5%. About 5 tons of this expl were used in the first blasting operations to remove rocks at Hells Gate, NY in 1869... 

The polypeptide precursors of the collagen molecule are formed in fibroblasts (or in the related osteoblasts of bone and chondro blasts of cartilage), and are secreted into the extracellular matrix. After enzymic modification, the mature collagen monomers aggre gate and become cross-linked to form collagen fibrils. 

A similar type expl was used in 1885 for blasting out Hell Gate Channel at the entrance of New York Harbor (see under Rack-a-rock in this Vol, Rl-Lto Rl-R)...
