Process biomimetic

The aim of this overview is first to present the general principles of electrocatalysis by metal complexes, followed by a series of selected examples published over the last 20 years illustrating the major electrochemical reactions catalyzed by metal complexes and their potential applications in synthetic and biomimetic processes, and also in the development of sensory devices. The area of metal complex catalysts in electrochemical reactions was reviewed in 1990.1... [Pg.472]

Poly(oxyethylene)-Si02 ormosils have been prepared as an approach to the preparation of biologically active polymer-apatite composites. For this purpose, Yamamoto et al. [72] obtained these Class II hybrids from triethoxysilyl-terminated poly(oxyethylene) (PEG) and TEOS by using the in situ sol-gel process. After being subjected to the biomimetic process to form the bone-like apatite layer, it was found that a dense apatite layer could be prepared on the hybrid materials, indicating that the silanol groups provide effective sites for CHA nucleation and growth. [Pg.380]

However, the two methods of choice for the oxidations of a, (B-unsaturated ketones are based on lanthanoid-BINOL complexes or a biomimetic process based on the use of polyamino acids as catalysts for the oxidation 1"1. [Pg.25]

However, the reverse reaction of alcohol oxidation in this system can be performed with flavin co-factor added (FMNH2 —> FMN), where molecular oxygen is reduced to H202. The entire biomimetic process under consideration is well illustrated by the following diagram [128] ... [Pg.219]

Another early success in biomimetic chemistry concerns reactions promoted by thiamin. In 1943, more than 35 years ago, Ukai, Tanaka, and Dokowa (12) reported that thiamin will catalyze a benzoin-type condensation of acetaldehyde to yield acetoin. This reaction parallels a similar enzymic reaction where pyruvate is decarboxylated to yield acetoin and acetolactic acid. Although the yields of the nonenzymic process are low, it is clearly a biomimetic process further investigation by Breslow, stimulated by the early discovery of Ugai et al., led to an understanding of the mechanism of action of thiamin as a coenzyme. [Pg.27]

Iron-containing cytochrome P-450 constitutes the most famous example of a selective C-H bond oxidizer. Although the exact nature of the mechanism remains controversial, the reaction most likely proceeds through radical intermediates [2]. The hydroxylation of activated C-H bonds has also been carried out in the presence of synthetic porphyrin complexes. In these biomimetic processes, ruthenium plays a relatively minor role when compared with iron. Zhang et al. [50], however, recently reported the enantioselective hydroxylation of benzylic C-H bonds using ruthenium complexes supported by a D4-sym-metric porphyrin bearing a crafted chiral cavity. Thus, complex 23 reacts in a stoichiometric manner with ethylbenzene to give phenethyl alcohol with a... [Pg.168]

Finally, the best building blocks identified can be coupled in a modular way to complete photocatalytic reaction cycles, which then should be able to mimic a certain biological process. If these bioinspired photocatalytic systems are performing rmder identical conditions as their native counterparts, a direct comparison of quantitative criteria such as turnover frequencies and the total number of catal5dic cycles is possible and should always be the finad goal to demonstrate the potential usefulness of the biomimetic process. [Pg.261]

Biomimetic processes other than inorganic crystallisation have also been described. Wright and co-workers templated the production of the polymer hemozoin, a crystalline heme aggregate used by malarial parasites in a detoxification process. Understanding and controlling this could lead to new antimalarial drugs. Peptide dendrimers containing multiple repeats of the Ala-His-His sequence known to mediate hemozoin formation were prepared and indeed were shown to induce its production. ... [Pg.107]

The radical cations of diene systems in cyclic molecules are also capable of reaction as demonstrated by Demnth, Roth and their coworkers. They have studied the influence of phase on the photochemical reactivity of some naturally occurring dienes. Thns the irradiation of the diene 10 in homogeneous solution (acetonitrile/water) in the presence of an electron-accepting sensitizer such as cyanonaphthalene (CN) or DCB brings about fraws,cw-isomerization only. However, when the electron transfer reaction is carried out in the presence of sodinm dodecyl sulphate, transannular hydrogen abstraction reactions yield the two prodncts 11 and 12. Similar reactivity is observed with frans-geranyl acetate 13 and all-trawi-famesyl acetate 14. The authors report that these cyclizations are the flrst examples of biomimetic processes brought about under SET conditions. [Pg.260]

In this chapter, we focus on the use of the continuous resonance QCM and EQCM devices to study enzymatic polymerization reactions, biochemical and biomimetic processes and to create thin polymer films electrochemically on the QCM electrode surface. We describe some QCM applications of thin polymer films in enzyme electrode and other biosensors and briefly describe specific cell binding systems to create whole cell biosensors. [Pg.375]

The nascent field of biomimetic processing as applied to siliceous materials is not within the scope of this book either. A starting point in the search for information in this area is the article by Donald D. Ulrich in Chemical and Engineering News (21). [Pg.29]
