Beckman Robotic Biomek 1000 automated laboratory The Biomek 1000 integrates the work formerly done by four instruments sample preparation system, diluter/dispenser, plate washer and a spectrometer finish. In can handle assays such as radio-immunoassays (RIA), fluorescence immunoassays (FIA), enzyme immunoassays EIA and enzyme-linked immunoassays (ELISA).

Others such as Macas et al. (1998) successfully adapted the Biomek 2000 (Beckman Coulter), a commonly used liquid handling robot, to prepare microarray slides using a specially constructed print head and quill pins. Up to 28 microscope slides could be placed on a work surface for printing. Biomek s HDRT head was adapted to accept microarray quill pins held between two parallel plates with holes drilled on 9-mm centers to dip into 96-well source plates. The quill pins were spring-loaded similar to the design...

The siRNA libraries are obtained as a 10 pM stock and we prepare a 1 30 dilution resulting in 333 nM daughter plate concentrations. Although this step can be done manually using multichannel pipets, it can be greatly expedited by the use of a liquid-handling system, such as the Biomek EX Workstation (Beckman Coulter Brea, CA).

Some of the most commonly utilized robotic modules for the 96-well SPE procedure are Tomtec Quadra (Tomtec, Hamden, CT, USA), Packard Multi-Probe (Packard Instruments, Meriden, CT, USA), Biomek (Beckman-Coulter, Fullerton, CA), and Tecan (Durham, NC, USA) units. 

The plate washing can be conducted automatically if a microplate washing system is available. We used the Perkin Elmer-Getus Pro/Pette instrument with a Pro/Wash head and the Beckman Biomek 1000 Automated Laboratory Workstation in our enzyme immunoassays. If automated instrumentation is not available, liquid transfers and plate washing can be carried out by a 12-channel micropipet. 

Make nine serial, fivefold dilutions of the virus directly in the microtiter trays using the Biomek 2000 robot or a multichannel pipet take 25 pL out of column 2 and add it to column 3, mix, change tips, and again take 25 pL out of column 3 and repeat the dilution up to column 10. Leave row 11 without vims, as control (see Table 4). 

Remove a constant volume of medium (e.g., 150 pL) from each cup using the Biomek 2000 robot (or a multichannel pipet) without disturbing the MT-4 cell clusters containing the formazan crystals.

Crude biological samples can be applied directly to the ProteinChip Arrays. Application can be done manually by pipetting or by employing Ciphergen s customized configuration of the Beckman Coulter Biomek 2000 laboratory automation station.
