Once people have made the fundamental decision to continue on medications, the question becomes how best to live with their new partner how to reach accommodations that will make the relationship healthy and satisfying. The shift in emphasis from whether to how best to maintain a medication relationship solidifies their investment in the biomedical model of mental illness and its claim to appropriate treatments. While many may still dream about a future free of pills, by this point they have likely made a lifelong commitment to drug therapy. The decisive moment comes with the realization that I ve accepted now that this is the way I am. This [using medications] is what I ll need to do for the rest of my life. ... 

Since results from studies with biomedical models indicate potential, there is of obvious interest in the effects of RA consumption in foods on the risk of atherogenesis in humans. The use of surrogate biomarkers for disease risk is more readily achievable for atherosclerosis than for cancer in humans and a number of genetic and environmental risk factors have been identified, with the relative abundance of the different lipoproteins being of primary importance (Lusis, 2000). To date, there have been no epidemiological studies that have examined the intake of CLA derived from foods with the risk of atherosclerosis. Patient beliefs about illness and therapy are strongly rooted within cultural norms that may be discordant with the traditional biomedical model of the physician. Herbalists on the other hand aim at a holistic approach— one that values the sum or totality of a plant s constituents—even those considered by the pharmacist to be worthless. In order to study the activity of a given herb, it is often necessary to purify it or isolate a specific compound—an example of the reductionist approach that characterises the biomedical model.
