We would like to acknowledge the contributions that dozens of people, both alive and dead, have made to the biomedical engineering profession in Mexico. From classrooms, research and instrumentation laboratories, hospital engineering departments, and private industry, all are certainly key figures in the past, present, and future of biomedical engineering.

The Polish Society for Biomedical Engineering (PSBE) has been established in November 1998. At present the PSBE has 307 members representing all regions of Poland and various professions, mainly scientists, engineers and physicians. There are also 4 honorary members and 3 foreign members of the society. 

While there is considerable overlap in the ethical issues in the fields of biomedical engineering and medicine, biomedical engineers also sometimes face ethical dilemmas that are unique to their profession. Issues such as safety, intellectual property ownership, risk disclosure, whistle blowing, and engineering professional codes of ethics are all examples. The Center for the Study of Ethics in the Professions at the Illinois Institute of Technology is a valuable resource in this regard, and maybe accessed online at http // ethics.iit.edu. In the following sections some brief case studies are offered for review and discussion.
