Biocidal clothing

Biocidal clothing for skin infections and body odor control... [Pg.821]

Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) is used by producers as a biocide to kill moulds that may cause furniture or shoe leather to deteriorate during storage and transportation in a humid climate. Placed in sachets, which are fixed inside the furniture or added to the footwear boxes, DMF evaporates and impregnates the leather, protecting it from moulds. However, it has been found to seriously affect consumers who were in contact with the products. DMF penetrated through the clothes onto the skin of many consumers. Cases of severe health problems have been reported in UK, Finland, France and Poland. Although it is normally not used by tanneries, there are examples where tanneries have used DMF. [Pg.259]

The preparation of an antimicrobial nylon 66 material by covalent bonding to biocidal cyclic N-chloramine moieties, including hydantoins, oxazolidinones, and imidazolidinones and its properties are considered. These cyclic materials were stable over at least 3 months dry storage, and after loss of activity by reaction with reducing Na thiosulphate, the activity was easily restored by exposure to free chlorine. Biocidal swatch tests showed that nylon fabrics containing N-chlorinated hydantoin functional groups produced a 7.2 log decrease in Staphylococcus aureus and a log 7.1 decrease in Escherichia coli after a contact time of only 10 minutes. The antimicrobial nylon should have many applications, e.g. in clothing, sutures, carpets, bmshes, etc. [Pg.63]

Never wipe your eyes with a clothes, gloves or hands that have contacted a biocide. Always read the MSDS before working with a new product. [Pg.405]

Reduction of harmful microorganisms. Removal of microorganisms from fabrics in hospitals is clearly of importance to minimize the spread of disease and to inhibit postoperative infections. In the domestic environment, it is as yet unclear to what extent washing clothes with a biocidally active formulation will help decrease the occurrence of disease and infection. It is possibly more important for babies, young children, and the elderly than healthy adults. Some forms of skin irritation may be caused by the presence of microorganisms on clothing. [Pg.612]

Looking at the results for washes undertaken at 40°C first, it can be seen that washing the impregnated clothes with base detergent alone leads to some loss of bacteria. This is either due to the base alone having slight biocidal activity or, more probably, due to... [Pg.613]
