Synthesis biochemical

Recent syntheses of steroids apply efficient strategies in which open-chain or monocyclic educts with appropiate side-chains are stereoselectively cyclized in one step to a tri- or tetracyclic steroid precursor. These procedures mimic the biochemical synthesis scheme where acyclic, achiral squalene is first oxidized to a 2,3-epoxide containing one chiral carbon atom and then enzymatically cyclized to lanostetol with no less than seven asymmetric centres (W.S. Johnson, 1%8, 1976 E.E. van Tamden, 1968). [Pg.279]

Divinylbenzene copolymers with styrene are produced extensively as supports for the active sites of ion-exchange resins and in biochemical synthesis. About 1—10 wt % divinylbenzene is used, depending on the required rigidity of the cross-linked gel, and the polymerization is carried out as a suspension of the monomer-phase droplets in water, usually as a batch process. Several studies have been reported on the reaction kinetics (200,201). [Pg.520]

From biochemical synthesis to bioenergetics, redox reactions are fundamental parts of the life process. Molecular oxygen is the oxidizing agent in most of these redox reactions. It has been estimated that the reduction of oxygen... [Pg.1485]

Within the last few years some progress has been made toward a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in the biochemical synthesis of sucrose and other disaccharides. It is the purpose of the authors to discuss the present state of knowledge of this subject. [Pg.44]

Among the compounds that have been isolated from the brassins were a new group of glucosyl esters of fatty acids, the structures of which were established by spectral methods (254, 255) as well as by chemical and biochemical synthesis (256, 257, 258). Although these esters were much less active than brassinolide in the bean second internode bioassay, their presence may be essential for seed germination since the enzymatic synthesis of these esters was correlated to germination (257, 258). [Pg.190]

An area of research of obvious importance and immense scope involves the incorporation of amino acid analogues into proteins. Incorporation is accomplished either by chemical synthesis or by biochemical synthesis using the protein assembly mechanisms of nature. Halogenated, especially fluorinated, amino acid analogues have been particularly useful tools in this research. In this section, selected examples of research using such analogues will be described to illustrate strategies and principles employed. [Pg.1532]

Both end groups at the spacer molecule, OH and especially NH2, are important for further biochemical synthesis. As follows from XPS measurements, in all cases only 2% Br was not consumed and remained at the PP surface. It was assumed that either steric problems played a role or these bromine groups were not situated directly at the surface. For all glycolate spacers a functionalization density of about 5 spacer-bonded OH groups per 100 C was measured. Additionally, two directly at the surface bonded (without spacer) OH groups per 100 C atoms were also detected. 4-5 NH2 groups/100 C were found using... [Pg.67]

Many other phytotoxins not presented here have been structurally characterized and tested In some plant bioassay systems. Numerous other reported phytotoxin studies are In the "active fraction" stage and structure elucidation of the active components has not been achieved. Nevertheless, from the data presented. It can generally be concluded that diverse microbes produce a broad range of chemistries with phytotoxic activities chemical and biochemical synthesis of almost all of these compounds Is unknown (but derivitizatlon studies to alter phytotoxic activity have been used In a few Instances) knowledge of the spectrum of species susceptible to these compounds Is Incomplete (many weed and crop species have not been tested some compounds are toxic to organisms other than plants) and the molecular mode of phytotoxin action Is unstudied or unknown for most. The major exception Is the vast amount of data on blalaphos, phosalacine, and phosphinothricin, which have achieved commercial status. [Pg.37]
