He referred to Castellio s supporters in terms reminiscent of Masson s description of biblical humanists. Recently one of your party showed such care for the Bible, he scoffed, that it no longer speaks a barbarous language but pure Latin (De haereticis a civili magistral puniendis, Paris, 1554 facs. Frankfurt, 1973, 64). 

Preface to his Latin translation of the Bible, addressed to King Edward VI in 1551.1 used the Leipzig, 1750 edition, where the quote can be found on "3 recto. 

History.—The knowledge of sodium carbonate or soda is of great antiquity, as indicated by two references in the Bible.1 The word translated nitre in the Authorized Version means natron or soda, and is correctly rendered lye in Jer. ii. 22 in the Revised Version. No alteration has been made in the other reference. The confusion of terms evidently originated in the resemblance between the Greek vtrpov employed by Dioscorides and the Latin nitrum used by Pliny to denote sodium carbonate, and the word nitre, loosely employed in early English as synonymous with natron or soda, but now reserved for potassium nitrate. 

The medium of exchange used as money is called the monetary standard. Such standards are of two types, commodity standards (precious metal) and noncommodity standards (paper, or so-called fiat money ). The term fiat money comes from the Latin fiatiot let there be, as in Fiat lux ( Letthctc be light ) in the Latin bible. Fiat money is paper transformed into money by the decree of the state. 

The Penitential Psalms have particular virtues which we indicate below. We use the psalm number given in the Latin Bible (Catholic) first, and the number given in Protestant and Jewish Bibles in parentheses.

A computer readily checks classic Latin sources, forwards and backwards, for words with this sequence of letters. Such sources are the Latin Vulgate Bible and the original Latin texts of Virgil s Aenead and Ovid s Metamorphoses. 

When more than one arm was present, the Latin word for arm, i.e., bracchium, wm used in the name. Two-armed ani three-armed lariat ethers were called bibrac-chial and tribracchial lariat ethers, respectively. These names were shortened to BiBLEs and TriBLEs. 

The lectures broke completely from tradition They were in German, not Latin, (we note that Luther also took the radical step of translating the Latin Bible into German), and the lectures contained more practical information than theory. Not only did Paracelsus dismiss the works of Galen and Avicenna, he is said to have tossed a copy of Avicenna s Canon into a student bonfire and expressed the hope that the author was in like circumstances. (Again we note the similarity to Luther. Luther, threatened with excommunication by an edict from the pope—z papal bull— solemnly and publicly burned the bull.)... 

I have translated Augustine s own text of the Bible, rather than use a modern version, because the precise wording is often important to his argument. Where the Latin text, or the Septuagint (LXX) which lies behind it, differ from the Hebrew, I have noted this in the reference.
