Berg Letter

Berg WW, Heidt LE, Pollock W, et al. 1984. Brominated organic species in the arctic atmosphere. Geophysical Research Letters 11 429-432. 

Berg went on to suggest that a protocol (set of rules) be developed to control the kinds of research that could be done on transgenic organisms and the conditions under which that research should take place. Berg s letter later became the basis for a federal voluntary policy on recombinant research that was developed at a famous conference held in 1975 at the Asilomar Conference Center in Pacific Grove, California.

Further, Rauff claimed that he had referred Becker s letter to Pradel and that he believed he had instructed Pradel to have the technical matters complained of in the letter remedied. However, the Becker letter makes no mention of any technical matters that needed to be remedied. Becker did not request any technical measures to be taken on the contrary, he had everything admirably under control. He had already changed what needed changing, and that was not even a technical defect, but rather the incorrect use of the accelerator pedal - whatever that may mean. In response to this initiative, the academy formed a committee of distinguished scientists, chaired by Dr. Paul Berg of Stanford University. These scientists prepared a letter (2) that appeared simultaneously in Science, Nature, and the Proceeiings of the National Academy of Sciences.
