The term phenol is the lUPAC name for a benzene ring bonded to a hydroxyl group (—OH), which is used in the name of the family of organic compounds derived from phenol. When there is a second substituent, the benzene ring is numbered starting from carbon 1, which is the carbon bonded to the —OH group.
