Power to drive a belt conveyor is made up of five components power to drive the empty belt, to move the load against fric tion of the rotating parts, to raise or lower the load, to overcome inertia in putting material into motion, and to operate a belt-driven tripper if required. As with most other conveyor problems, if is advisable to work with formulas and constants from a specific manufacturer in making these calculations. The last term Pg represents the power losses due to ancillary equipment such as feeders, trippers, ploughs (scrapers), etc. For each additional device of this kind with which the belt conveyor is equipped, the following values should be added to the power consumption 1 kW up to 650 mm belt width, 2 kW up to 1250 mm, 3 —4kWfor larger widths. These values relate to a belt speed of 1 m/second. They should therefore be multiplied by the actual speed in m/second. If there are skirt plates to confine the material to the belt, an additional 0.1 kW power consumption per metre length of the conveyor should be allowed. [Pg.666]

When a conveyor belt is equipped with a tripper, the belt must rise about 5 ft (1.5 m) above its horizontal plane of travel. [Pg.249]

This rise must be included in the vertical lift power input computation. When the tripper is driven by the belt, allow 1 hp (0.75 kW) for a 16-in (406.4-mm) belt, 3 hp (2.2 kW) for a 36-in (914.4-mm) belt, and 7 hp (5.2 kW) for a 60-in (1524-mm) belt. Where a rotary cleaning brush is driven by the conveyor shaft, allow about the same power input to the brush for belts of various widths. [Pg.249]

Different conveyors such as the belt, chain, and screw types, as well as pneumatic equipment, are used to transport bulk powdered foods. Conveyor belts are used for movement of different types of bulk solids at long distances. The belt and its load are supported on idlers on both conveying and return sections. The material can be discharged over the end of the belt either by using a diagonal scraper, by tilting one or more of the idler pulleys, or by using a tripper. [Pg.295]
