When a very small axial spaee is available, belleville springs, finger washers, or curved washers may be used.

For the diet study, Abonyi obtained organically grown foods (whenever possible) from the Belleville area. Various recipes were prepared following historic cookbooks and newspaper articles. All but one of the recipes was prepared in an iron cooking pot from the 19th century, which was provided by the Bradley House Museum in Clarkson, Ontario.

The study of food and history in 19 century Ontario provides a rich source of information that may be useful for interpreting bone chemistry data from prehistoric societies. It is our hope that it also provides a clearer view of the life of the early settlers of Belleville.

In acid media (pH 2) magnetite crystals ca. 10 nm across transform topotactically to maghemite via an adsorption reaction which traps mobile electrons from the bulk material and reduces interfacial Fe the Fe ions that form are selectively leached into solution (Jolivet Tronc, 1988). Electron delocalization also induces ferrihydrite in contact with small magnetite particles to transform into a spinel layer (Belleville etal., 1992).
