Behavioural approach wider applications

Scheme 2.3.3). The approach has been used to make imidazoles (11) with dimethylamino groups in the 4- and/or 2-positions. Such compounds are not well known (they are inclined to be sensitive to the elfects of air and moisture, and their behaviour in electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions parallels that of i (A(-dimethylaniline [8]), and the method is of value for that reason alone. Its wider application to imidazole synthesis seems unlikely. 

In the next, and final, chapter we look at some applications of the behavioural approach in areas other than safety in organizations. These cover safety in wider contexts and also other applications, such as quality improvement within organizations. They are drawn, both from our own experience and from the work of others. 

BEYOND SAFETY WIDER APPLICATIONS OF THE BEHAVIOURAL APPROACH... 

The broad conclusion indicated by the evidence considered in this section is that organic retarders are substances that are readily adsorbed on to the surfaces of growing particles of hydration products, especially C S H, and which do so in preference to complexing Ca ions in aqueous solution. The monodentate mode of attachment proposed by Thomas and Birchall (T49) explains the differences in behaviour among sugars, but its applicability in this respect to a wider range of substances has yet to be examined. It does not appear to account for the observation that the effective retarders are compounds in which two oxygen atoms are located on adjacent carbon atoms, or are otherwise able to approach each other closely. 

Extensions of variational methods to otha problems have yet to be tried. The approach is directly applicable to problems involving flowing systems, to equations encompassing coupled heat and mass transfer and to a wider thermodynamical treatment of chemmal systems in their entirety. This in its fullest form will allow thermal theory to be migrated in a general theory of irreversible processes. Under sucdi a scheme the dynamic (transient) behaviour of chemical reactions can be discxissed without recourse to the uniform Semenov-like conditions universal in contemporary treatments.
