Beech tree

Trace amounts of vanadium have been found in meteorites and seawater, and it has been identified in the spectmm of many stars including the earth s sun. The occurrence of vanadium in oak and beech trees and some forms of aquatic sea life indicates its biological importance. 

The beech leaf-mining weevil has a rather different life cycle. In this case the weevil overwinters as a beetle. The eggs of the beech leaf-mining weevil are laid on the leaves of beech trees. It is only occasionally found in orchards.

Photosynthesis (Scheme 1.2) is the source of food and fossil fuel and has played an important role in the origin of life.a A fully grown beech tree assimilates about 10 m3 of C02 (contained in 4 x 104 m3 of air) on a sunny day, producing the same amount of 02 and 12 kg of carbohydrates. Globally, photosynthesis stores about 2 x 10121 of C02 in biomass per year, the equivalent of 2 x 1019kJ, most of which, however, is eventually returned to the atmosphere by reoxidation.

Hutchens Indian Herbalogy of North America cites herbs that, according to medical folklore, are said to act against hydrophobia or rabies, some of which are in common with Heinerman s listing. In addition to rue, there is mention of balsam fir, beech tree, echinacea, henbane, Jimsonweed, rue, skullcap, St. John s wort, and tansy. Jimsonweed and henbane contain the alkaloid hyoscyamine, as do some other members of the family Solanaceae, or nightshade family. The family Solanaceae, incidentally, is well represented in HartweU (1982b).
