The solution was first obtained independently by Wertheim [32] and Thiele [33] using Laplace transfonns. Subsequently, Baxter [34] obtained the same solutions by a Wiener-Hopf factorization teclmique. This method has been generalized to charged hard spheres. [Pg.481]

The CS pressures are close to the machine calculations in the fluid phase, and are bracketed by the pressures from the virial and compressibility equations using the PY approximation. Computer simulations show a fluid-solid phase transition tiiat is not reproduced by any of these equations of state. The theory has been extended to mixtures of hard spheres with additive diameters by Lebowitz [35], Lebowitz and Rowlinson [35], and Baxter [36]. [Pg.482]

The MS approximation for the RPM, i.e. charged hard spheres of the same size in a conthuium dielectric, was solved by Waisman and Lebowitz [46] using Laplace transfomis. The solutions can also be obtained [47] by an extension of Baxter s method to solve the PY approximation for hard spheres and sticky hard spheres. The method can be fiirtlier extended to solve the MS approximation for unsynnnetrical electrolytes (with hard cores of unequal size) and weak electrolytes, in which chemical bonding is municked by a delta fiinction interaction. We discuss the solution to the MS approximation for the syimnetrically charged RPM electrolyte. [Pg.492]

The interaction between ions of the same sign is assumed to be a pure hard sphere repulsion for r < a. It follows from simple steric considerations that an exact solution will predict dimerization only if i < a/2, but polymerization may occur for o/2 < L = o. However, an approximate solution may not reveal the fiill extent of polymerization that occurs in a more accurate or exact theory. Cummings and Stell [ ] used the model to study chemical association of uncharged atoms. It is closely related to the model for adliesive hard spheres studied by Baxter [70]. [Pg.500]

There were two schools of thought concerning attempts to extend Hammett s treatment of substituent effects to electrophilic substitutions. It was felt by some that the effects of substituents in electrophilic aromatic substitutions were particularly susceptible to the specific demands of the reagent, and that the variability of the polarizibility effects, or direct resonance interactions, would render impossible any attempted correlation using a two-parameter equation. - o This view was not universally accepted, for Pearson, Baxter and Martin suggested that, by choosing a different model reaction, in which the direct resonance effects of substituents participated, an equation, formally similar to Hammett s equation, might be devised to correlate the rates of electrophilic aromatic and electrophilic side chain reactions. We shall now consider attempts which have been made to do this. [Pg.137]

Big name science houses and chemical manufacturers These include such names as Fisher, Baxter, VWR, Cole-Parmer, Alltech, Aldrich and Sigma. It is very hard to get a fledgling account with these giants, but if one can then the sky s the limit. Most chemists should be happy getting these companies products through the distributors. [Pg.11]

In 1982 a study of the usefulness of DBBF in the production of a blood substitute was reported (99). A single modification achieved the dual goals of reduced oxygen affinity and restricted tetramer—dimer dissociation. This work was confirmed in 1987 (98). The product, called aa-hemoglobin, was formulated in Ringer s lactate. P q under physiologic conditions is 3.7 kPa (28.0 torr). Hill s parameter is 2.2, and the Bohr effect was reduced (100). Plasma retention was increased, and the product appeared to be less heterogeneous than some of the other derivatives under study. Its production was scaled up by Baxter Healthcare Corp., under contract to the U.S. Army. [Pg.165]
