Automobile battery grids employ about 1—3 wt % antimony—lead alloys. Hybrid batteries use low (1.6—2.5 wt %) alloys for the positive grids and nonantimony alloys for the negative grids to give reduced or no water loss. The posts and straps of virtually all lead—acid batteries are made of alloys containing about 3 wt % antimony. 

Tlie indi ddual cells are assembled into batteries after a leakage test to check for faulty welding joints in steel containers or cracks and improper seals in the plastic encased cells. Cells that are to be delivered without electroltye are emptied after the fomiation cycles. Tlie steel-cased cells hav e to be separated by mechanical means to prevent intercell shorts and are often assembled into wooden crates. Tlie cells in plastic cases can be cemented together or strapped with tape.

The launch switch, motorcycle battery and a spare parts box can all be attached to the back of the launcher. With this unit a two man team can carry the launcher and a minimum of three missiles. One man handles the launcher with one missile strapped In place and the second man carries one or more missiles in each hand. A wraparound carrying strap would be helpful in this instance. 

Water quality is an issue of international concern due to increasing contamination from a variety of sources. The most common types of water examined are surface waters, ground waters and waste waters. Common indicators of the quality of water are conductivity, pH, ion and nutrient measurements. The HI-991300 from Sheen Instruments Ltd (Figure 8.9) is a portable conductivity meter that measures conductivity as well as total dissolved solids (TDS), temperature and pH. For conductivity, it has a range from 0-3999 pS/cm with a resolution of 1 pS/cm. All readings are compensated automatically for any temperature variation. Calibration is carried out manually with provided solutions. The device can be operated with one hand and the rubber keypad is splash-proof. The HI-991300 is supplied complete with a conductivity probe with a one meter screened cable, a wrist strap for safety and the 9 V battery.

Lead—acid batteries are mono-metallic. All active materials, plate grids, straps and connectors are made mostly of lead. Hence, recycling of lead from batteries is an easy process. Many countries have national lead pools (comprising production of primary lead and recycling of secondary lead). Schematics of the operation of a national lead pool is presented in Fig. 4.2.
