Basic Materials in Paint and Coatings

Paint is a mechanical mixture or dispersion of pigments or powders, at least some of which are normally opaque, in a liquid or medium known as the vehicle. The paint vehicle normally consists of a nonvolatile portion that remains as part of the paint film and a volatile portion that evaporates, thus leaving the film. The dried paint film therefore consists of both pigment and the nonvolatile vehicle. The volatile portion of the vehicle is normally required to ensure proper application properties. [Pg.59]

The proportion of pigment to nonvolatile vehicle usually determines the glossiness of the dried film. For example, if this proportion is small i.e., less [Pg.59]

Oils (Martens, 1974) are used in coatings either by themselves, as a portion of the nonvolatile vehicle, or as an integral part of a varnish when combined with resin, or of a synthetic liquid when combined with its resinous portion. Table 3.2 lists oils used in the coatings industry in 1977. In particular, oil [Pg.60]

Many of the oils cannot be used in the raw state, since they are produced by crushing seeds, nuts, fish, etc. Others can be used in the raw state but are often treated to give them special properties among these treatments are the following. [Pg.61]
