Barrel inspection To ensure proper performance, different parts of the barrel can be checked to meet tolerance requirements (usually setup by the manufacturer) and determine if any wear has occurred such as inside diameter, straightness and concentricity, and surface condition. [Pg.496]

It cannot be emphasized too strongly that dirt and correct lubrication are incompatible. The lubricant manufacturer has a comprehensive system of classification, filtration and inspection of packages, which ensures that all oils and greases leaving his plant are free from liquid and solid contaminants. It is in his own interests that the user should take the same care to ensure that the lubricant enters his machinery in as clean a condition as that in the bulk tank or barrel. Inspection of the barrel and screw for wear can provide information on the root cause for the wear. For example, if wear occurs at an axial location on only one side of the barrei and on all sides (angular direction) of the screw, then the likely root cause is that the barrel is out of alignment at that axial location. Chemical Analysis. It is suggested that a set procedure be established for running specific analyses according to a specific timetable.
