The introduction of the concept of sustainable development with the approach of the Rio Conference in 1992 led the member states of the Barcelona Convention to draw up an Agenda 21 for the Mediterranean (Vallega, 1995). This concept adapted to the Mediterranean context forms an integral part of the objectives of the MAP.
