Wet Oxidation Reactor Design. Several types of reactor designs have been employed for wet oxidation processes. Zimpro, the largest manufacturer of wet oxidation systems, typically uses a tower reactor system. The reactor is a bubble tower where air is introduced at the bottom to achieve plug flow with controlled back-mixing. Residence time is typically under one hour. A horizontal, stirred tank reactor system, known as the Wetox process, was initially developed by Barber-Cohnan, and is also offered by Zimpro.

Smaller amounts are produced in Japan by Nippon Petrochemical, in Hungary by Medimpex-Richter, and by minor producers in several other countries. Barber manufacturers, particularly Merck (U.S.) and Glaxo (U.K.), have exited the market. Although estimates vary, it appears that ca 10,000 kg/yr of vitamin is produced (1). 

Stain (ASTMD1328). This test measures the amount of stain on paper or other ceUulosic materials by asphalt. Variations of the cigarette paper stain procedure include the Barber stain, usually conducted at 54.4°C and 3.9 MN (400 g-force). Talc stain tests are also used.
