Union Connectors. CoUar and cone-type connectors (Figs. 26a and b) are nearly always used to connect smaU bore tubes at pressures up to about 400 MPa (140). The included angle of the end of the tube is 55—57° and that of the seat 60—61° so that when the gland nut is tightened into the connector a metal-to-metal seal is formed along a narrow band of contact between the end of the tube and the connector. Polymers used for seat and plug seals and internal static seals include PTFE (polytetrafluoroeth ene) and other fluorocarbons, polyethylene, nylon, polyether-ether-ketone, and acetal. Fluorocarbons are often carbon or glass-filled to improve mechanical properties and heat resistance. Temperature and chemical compatibility with the process fluid are the key selec tion criteria. In order to process larger quantities of coal, an extraction reactor was constructed. The extractor was essentially a standing metal cylmder sealed on the bottom, approximately 30 cm in diameter and 84 cm in length. An electrical belt-driven stirring mechanism was fitted through the top of the reactor to provide mixmg, and three elechical band heaters were wrapped around the outside to supply process heat.
