Balancing execution approach

In the equation-oriented approach, the executive organizes the equations and controls a general-purpose equation solver. The equations for material and energy balances may be grouped separately from those for the calculation of physical properties or phase equiHbria, or as ia the design of some simulators, the distinction between these groups of equations may disappear completely. 

The second step required to address a knowledge gap is to develop an approach to resolve it. Here one will inevitably confront the additional complexity of alternatives. Presented with options, devising an analysis approach entails ascertaining which among them offers the best balance between analytic effectiveness on one hand, and executability in terms of capability, cost, and schedule requirements on the other. After all, no matter how scientifically potent and technically effective, an approach that cannot be executed is worthless, and one that is unnecessarily difficult and needlessly inefficient will likely be only marginally better. 

Recommended Approach to Accounting for Capital A modified approach based on one of the traditional tools is the best fit for supply chain capital cost accounting. Because an organization with its own financial statement might serve many supply chains, SCM demands more detail in accounting for capital costs than an approach like EVA. As Old Line shows, we must associate costs for capital with the process steps needed to make a specihc product. The supply chain is also a multicompany environment in which individual income statements and balance sheets are less relevant. So the primary audience for financial information is not the shareholders, but rather the executives responsible for making supply chains work — and work efficiently. 

Two different strategies may be employed to partition the work among processors. The first approach, dynamic load balancing, often uses a master-slave model where one processor, the master, keeps a list of tasks to be executed and apportions these tasks to the other processors, the slaves (the master may be a slave as well). When a processor has completed a task, it reports back to the master and requests a new task. This dynamic task allocation requires interprocessor communication, but has the advantage that load balance may be obtained even for problems where the execution time for individual tasks is variable and not known in advance.
