Walter Reppe (1892-1969) was the research director of Badische Anilin- Sodafabrik (BASF) at Ludwigshafen, Germany. His research included metal-catalyzed reactions of acetylene (1938) and of carbon monoxide (1939) (Section 2.1.2.2). High-pressure catalytic acetylene chemistry is nowadays named after him. He also discovered the metal carbonyl-catalyzed cyclooligomerization of acetylene to yield styrene, benzene, and cyclooctatetraene (1948) [10, 77]. [Pg.20]

To satisfy his curiosity about dyeing processes, he took a summer course at the Badische Anilin- und Sodafabrik (BASF) in 1920. There he came into close personal and professional contact with P. Julius, the director of the BASF, who had been very interested in Meyer s work on the coupling of phenol ether. Julius wanted for his successor a scientist acquainted with the particulars of dyestuffs and having a sound knowledge of physical chemistry in addition to organic chemistry, and the position of director of... [Pg.472]

The OSS men, instead of twiddling their thumbs, decided to look around Heidelberg for traces of money. Someone had told them that where they found Schmitz, there they would find money. Schmitz had come up the hard way from a commercial school in Essen, the iron city, and had risen from bank clerk to staff member of the Kaiser s war machine. He had been a director of Farben s predecessor firm, Badische Anilin und Sodafabrik. Also a director of the Deutsches Reichsbank, he was thought to be the wealthiest banker in Germany. In world affairs he had gained considerable respectability as director of the Bank of International Settlements in Geneva. [Pg.43]

Among the polyesters that are used for PVC, the copolymers of butadiene with ethyl fumarates and ethyl acrylates deserve mention. They have been produced by Badische Anilin-und Sodafabrik (BASF) under the commercial name Palamoll. Palamoll I consists of 75% diethyl fumarate and 25% butadiene Palamoll II contains equal parts of butadiene and ethyl acrylate. In combination with the same amount of liquid plasticizers (such as DOP), films with cold resistance down to — 60°C. can be produced. These products are especially important for cable insulation because of their good dielectric properties. The Palamoll products are produced by emulsion polymerization and can be directly combined with emulsions of PVC. [Pg.99]

The author wishes to thank his many coworkers, cited in this review, who have contributed many of their own ideas and were enthusiastically engaged in this research program. Without the generous financial help of the Deutsche Forschungsgemein-schaft, the Fonds der Chemischen Industrie. Because of their involvement at Auschwitz the top management of IG Farbenindustrie was tried and convicted at the Nuremberg trials after World War II and the cartel broken into three large branches—Bayer, Hoechst, and BASF (Badische Anilin and Sodafabrik)—each of which does more business than DuPont, the largest American chemical company. [Pg.270]

Since his lack of financial funds prevented his entering upon an academic career, Mittasch decided to accept an industrial job.
