Walter Reppe (1892-1969) was the research director of Badische Anilin- Sodafabrik (BASF) at Ludwigshafen, Germany. His research included metal-catalyzed reactions of acetylene (1938) and of carbon monoxide (1939) (Section 2.1.2.2). High-pressure catalytic acetylene chemistry is nowadays named after him. He also discovered the metal carbonyl-catalyzed cyclooligomerization of acetylene to yield styrene, benzene, and cyclooctatetraene (1948) [10, 77].

Among the polyesters that are used for PVC, the copolymers of butadiene with ethyl fumarates and ethyl acrylates deserve mention. They have been produced by Badische Anilin-und Sodafabrik (BASF) under the commercial name Palamoll. Palamoll I consists of 75% diethyl fumarate and 25% butadiene Palamoll II contains equal parts of butadiene and ethyl acrylate. In combination with the same amount of liquid plasticizers (such as DOP), films with cold resistance down to — 60°C. can be produced. These products are especially important for cable insulation because of their good dielectric properties. The Palamoll products are produced by emulsion polymerization and can be directly combined with emulsions of PVC.

The rapid rise in the production of methanol as chemical raw material first began in 1923 when the first large-scale synthesis plant was constructed by the Badische Anilin und Sodafabrik, Ludwigshafen (BASF). Based on the woik by Mittasch, M. Pier and his staff proved during test covering several years that iron is scarcely suitable as a catalyst for methanol production. On the contrary, it was established that iron must be carefully avoided in the production of methanol synthesis catalysts as its presence under the operating conditions applied to methanol synthesis leads to the formation of iron penta carbonyl which on its part resulted... 

The synthetic chemistry efforts in the retinoid field have been dominated for the most part by two large research groups Hoffmann-La Roche (Mayer and Isler, 1971) and Badische Anilin und Sodafabrik (BASF) (Pommer, 1960). These investigators have published numerous papers and patents as a result of industrially oriented research on the practical total synthesis of retinol and its analogs. Selected portions of this work can be adapted to the synthesis of radiolabeled retinoids.
