B-cell regeneration

Most promising areas are anticancer activity [163-165], immune system stimulation [166-168] through the production of interleukins and T and B cell regeneration, anti-HIV effects (polysaccharides inhibiting binding of HIV to T cells) [169], blood sugar reduction (enhancing secretion of insulin and carbohydrate metabolism) [125,170], and anti-inflammatory [171,172]. [Pg.272]

Evidence in the present paper suggests an alternative function of poly(ADP-ribose) synthetase inhibitors in the improvement of surgical diabetes. In this case, poly(ADP-ribose) synthetase inhibitors may relieve restriction of DNA replication and so cause B-cell regeneration (Fig. 4). Since a low capacity for B-cell regeneration has been suggested as a predisposition for the development of human diabetes [17], the present study may provide a novel clue for the prevention and treatment of human diabetes. [Pg.415]

Plutonium emits ionizing radiation primarily in the form of alpha particles. The type and severity of the biological response to this radiation will depend not only on the amount of radiation emitted but also on the radiosensitivity of the tissue and contact (retention) time. In general, tissues undergoing rapid cell regeneration are more radiosensitive than slower or nonregenerating cell systems (see Appendix B). [Pg.66]
