Automobiles plastics

With metallizing decorative plastic parts and automobile plastic reflectors, a good film quality is required but also important and decisive are low expenses of the coating process. Metallization of such parts is often done in horizontal cylindrical coaters with the evaporation sources in the cylinder axis and the substrates arranged around them on planetary axes as can be seen in Fig. 64. [Pg.225]

Plasticizers. Plasticizers are used to increase the flexibility of nylon and improve impact strength. They are most commonly used in nylon-11 and nylon-12 for such applications as flexible fuel hoses for automobiles. Plasticizers for polyamide are often sulphonamides, although others such as long-chain diols have been used as well as the caprolactam monomer in unextracted nylon-6. The latter material has been used for applications such as fishing lines. [Pg.5914]

Automotive and architectural laminates of PVB develop maximum impact strength near 20°C, as shown in Figure 2. This balance is obtained by the plasticizer-to-resin ratio and the molecular weight of the resins. It has been adjusted to this optimum temperature based on environmental conditions and automobile population at various ambient temperatures. The frequency and severity of vehicle occupant injuries vs temperature ranges at the accident location have been studied (5), and the results confirm the selection of the maximum performance temperature and decreasing penetration resistance at temperature extremes. [Pg.524]

Exact si2ing of mica products coupled with surface treatment procedures have led to a greater use for wet ground mica in plastic compositions, particularly automobile bodies. These quahty products demand a high dollar value. [Pg.289]

The future for mica is ia the speciaUty plastic market, eg, as a molecular barrier ia plastic containers and ia plastic automobile parts. [Pg.293]

Flexible foams are resiUent open-ceU stmctures with densities varying from 25—650 kg/m, depending on the choice of the raw materials. Most flexible foams are produced in the form of a slab or bun in a contiauous process in widths up to 2.4 m and thicknesses up to 1.2 m. A Hquid foamable mixture is pumped onto a conveyor, which moves through a tunnel where reaction and foaming occur (101). Similar mixtures can be placed in a mold and allowed to foam. This process is used in the manufacture of automobile seats (see Foamed plastics). [Pg.145]

Calcined aluminas are also used for polishing appHcations by mixing into polishing compounds in the form of paste or suspensions. Polishing aluminas are used to alter the surfaces of metals, plastics, glass, and stones in the manufacture of cutlery, automobiles, computers, furniture, eyewear, semiconductors, and jewelry. Polishing aluminas are also used to coat surfaces, such as video tapes (1). [Pg.162]

Some amino resins are used as additives to modify the properties of other materials. For example, a small amount of amino resin added to textile fabric imparts the familiar wash-and-wear quaUties to shirts and dresses. Automobile tires are strengthened by amino resins which improve the adhesion of mbber to tire cord (qv). A racing sailboat may have a better chance to win because the sails of Dacron polyester have been treated with an amino resin (1). Amino resins can improve the strength of paper even when it is wet. Molding compounds based on amino resins are used for parts of electrical devices, botde and jar caps, molded plastic dinnerware, and buttons. [Pg.321]

Electrical Applications. Plastics are used for electrical insulation, conduit and enclosures, lighting fixtures, and mechanical devices. The most widely used plastic for wire and cable insulation is flexible, plasticized PVC, which constitutes well over half the market in insulating wires for buildings, automobiles, appHances, and power and control lines. Polyethylene is also a factor. Higher performance plastics such as nylon and fluoropolymers also play a smaller role in this area. [Pg.333]
