Aurothioglucose/gold sodium thiomalate

Gold drugs, such as aurothioglucose, gold sodium thiomalate, and auranofin, have long been used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. The most common adverse effects associated with gold therapy appeared in skin and mucous membranes (about 15% of all patients) and kidneys (about 5-10%), mostly as proteinuria. [Pg.153]

Gold compounds can be effective for active RA and may delay or prevent erosive progression of joints in some patients. Gold sodium thiomalate (24), and aurothioglucose (23) are available as injectable preparations. An oral preparation is also available, but is less effective and frequently causes diarrhea. Injectable gold is adrninistered in 10-mg amounts as a test dose, followed by 25 mg once weekly for two weeks, then 50 mg weekly for 20 weeks. [Pg.40]

The exact mechanism of action of the gold compounds (for example, gold sodium thiomalate, aurothioglucose, and auranofin) in the suppression or prevention of... [Pg.185]

GOLD COMPOUNDS. Aurothioglucose and gold sodium thiomalate are given intramuscularly, preferably in the upper outer quadrant of the gluteus muscle. The nurse gives auranofin orally. [Pg.194]

Rheumatoid arthritis (aurothioglucose) IM Initially, 10 mg, then 25 mg for 2 doses, then 50 mg weekly thereafter until total dose of 0.8- Iggiven. If patient is improved and there are no signs of toxicity, may give 50 mg at 3-to 4-wk intervals for many months. Rheumatoid arthritis (gold sodium thiomalate) IM Initially, 10 mg, then 25 mg for 2nd... [Pg.106]

Gold sodium thiomalate Myochrysine Similar to aurothioglucose. Similar to aurothioglucose. [Pg.223]

In rheumatoid arthritis the most commonly used gold salts are sodium aurothiomalate and aurothioglucose (3). There is some reason to believe that adverse effects are less frequent with the suspensions (of aurothioglucose or aurothiosulfate) than with the more rapidly absorbed solution (of sodium gold thiomalate) (SEDA-16, 233) (4). [Pg.1520]
