You will learn how to use detail to add interest and vitality to your writing. Sights, sounds, examples, and evidence help your reader to connect with your essay. They also turn a weak essay into a strong one. Details are just one way to draw a positive impression from the admissions committee. Understand who they are and what they are looking for so you can write to your audience and make a connection.

There must be a sympathetic (you should forgive the term) bond forged. In modem, western society, men and women are, to an extent, raised in separate cultures. They are certainly raised, even now, with different cultural expectations. Whether the root of this difference is from nature or nurture I am not going to get into here. However, because the expectations the larger culture sets for our lives are different depending on our gender, it follows that the fantasies that are shaped by those lives and those expectations will be different. Men and women both have power fantasies. Both fantasize about sex, and success. But, in general, how those fantasies materialize is different. 

Notes are certainly acceptable. However, stay connected with the audience. Talk to them, not just in front of them (Anholt 2006). Use your notes unobtrusively (Jaffe 2001). My point The screen, your notes, and the ceiling never made a decision, never retained a consultant, and never approved a budget (Koegel 2002). People in your audience do those things. Talk to them ... 

Speaking of contradictions, I presented a webinar about speaking. One anonymous reviewer wrote that what he/she disliked were all of the quotes by famous people, there were too many and quite unnecessary. Another reviewer said that one of the features he/she liked was the quotes that were included throughout the talks. I often see such wide-ranging reviews. They illustrate the previously-discussed different learning preferences of members of an audience. Accordingly, you need to throw out many different hooks during your presentation so as to eventually catch each member of the audience. You also need thick skin. While you cannot connect with everyone in the audience for your entire presentation, strive to connect with each person for a part of your presentation.

You may have connected with one or a few audience members who can advance that purpose. Pursue that opportunity by following up. What you do or don t do, now that the presentation is over, may determine the success or failure of your speaking effort.
