Atomic force microscopy overview

The goal of this chapter is to provide an overview of the measurement of colloidal forces at liquid/Iiquid interfaces, using predominately atomic force microscopy (AFM)-First, some of the types and origins of the relevant colloidal forces are introduced. This is followed by a general description of the operation of AFM at rigid interfaces. The next sections focus on forces at liquid/Iiquid interfaces, beginning with a discussion of other measuring techniques employed at liquid/Iiquid interfaces, followed by a summary of... [Pg.78]

This book should serve both as a state-of-art overview of what s going on in frontier areas (theoretical evaluation of noncovalent interactions, hydrogen-bonded crystals, coordination networks, solid-state reactivity and reactions taking place in the solid state, crystal polymorphism, etc.) and as an entry point to the fundamental methods and techniques required for a successful investigation of crystalline solids (crystallography, solid-state NMR spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy etc.). [Pg.362]

Two new sciences are developing now to enlarge our ideas about the laws of adhesion Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), which for the first time has allowed us to measure molecular forces and computer modeling (CM), which has pushed the theory of molecular adhesion onto a new level. These new arguments are described in Chapters 3 and 5 to give an overview of the three laws of adhesion. [Pg.21]

Recently, several different techniques to study micromechanical properties have been applied. Besides spectroscopic and scattering techniques, the microscopic techniques of electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy are particularly useful for direct determination of micromechanical properties in polymers (2-7). A brief overview about successfully applicable techniques is given in this article. Using these techniques, micromechanical properties of different polymers that have been studied are also reviewed. [Pg.4710]
