Atmospheric deposition climatic factors

Mapping the GSC survey data for Hg concentrations in stream sediments in terms of local flow-channel and upland/lowland patterns provides a new means to evaluate these data in relation to local geologic and topographic conditions and configurations. Overlaying other geo-referenced data layers such as climate and atmospheric deposition maps including Hg deposition will reveal additional association-patterns between Hg in stream sediments and surrounding factors. 

These processes are not evenly distributed, since the effects observed in any locality depend upon the emission distribution pattern and transport, the rate of oxidation in the atmosphere, and the rate of deposition, which depends upon climatic factors. 

The comparison of deposition chemistry variables was made with other possible factors, which might affect the interaction of biogeochemical cycles of C, N, S, and P, like the climate patterns (annual precipitation and mean temperature). There was no correlation between these climate parameters and decomposition rates. This examination shows that atmospheric deposition chemistry is the most important factor affecting litter decomposition rates and carbon-to-element ratios at study sites along the gradient.
