Assessment of General Characteristics

Part 3 lists the initial factors that the designer should consider when planning an installation, to ensure its viability and safety. It is usually essential to contact the electricity supply company early and advise the total load and possible future increases so that an adequate supply will be available when required. Spaces for substations, standby facilities and switchrooms, and any cable duct requirements should be discussed with whoever is responsible for the site and buildings as soon as possible so that provision can be made in the plans. 

The environmental conditions and other external influences, listed in Appendix 5 of the standard, should be considered to see if any apply and what should be done to counter them. For example, in rural areas the electricity supply might be an overhead line in a lightning-prone zone where it may be prudent to install voltage surge suppressors (see new section 443) and perhaps fireproof the supply intake. In nurseries and schools, the installation should be child-proof and electric heaters located out of reach. Other factors affecting the selection of equipment are detailed in Part 5. 

The maintainability requirement of Chapter 34 entails the selection of durable equipment which can be readily opened for servicing, and its location in an accessible position. This is a requirement frequently overlooked by
