Aspirin allergic reactions

Although extraordinary in its powers, aspirin is also more dangerous than commonly believed. Only about 15 g can be fatal to a small child, and aspirin can cause stomach bleeding and allergic reactions in long-term users. Even more serious is a condition called Reye s syndrome, a potentially fatal reaction to aspirin sometimes seen in children recovering from the flu. As a result of these problems, numerous other NSAIDs have been developed in the last several decades, most notably ibuprofen and naproxen. [Pg.537]

The NSAIDs are contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity. There is a cross-sensitivity to other NSAIDs. Therefore, if a patient is allergic to one NSAID, there is an increased risk of an allergic reaction with any other NSAID. Hypersensitivity to aspirin is a contraindication for all NSAIDs. In general, the NSAIDs are contraindicated during the third trimester of pregnancy and during lactation. [Pg.162]

Patients with asthma or allergic rhinitis may be hypersensitive to indometacin and can develop severe general allergic reactions, especially if they are allergic to aspirin. [Pg.1743]

Do not give if there is a history of allergic reaction to aspirin or other NSAIDs. [Pg.130]

We have found reports on eight patients whith systemic lupus erythematosus who developed adverse reactions to ibuprofen (Mandell et al. 1976 Szczeklik et al. 1977 a Sonnenblick and Abraham 1978). These reactions were characterized by sudden appearance of high fever, abdominal pain, and rash. Serum transaminases were rased in some patients. Raised concentrations of serum transaminases also seem to be common in patients with active systemic lupus erythematosus, who are receiving aspirin (Seaman et al. 1974). The hepatotoxic effect of aspirin in these patients may be due, not to allergic reaction but to a disturbance in aspirin transformation, resulting in the formation of a toxic metabolite (Anonymous 1974). [Pg.291]
