Asphalt modifiers

Blends with styrenic block copolymers improve the flexibiUty of bitumens and asphalts. The block copolymer content of these blends is usually less than 20% even as Httie as 3% can make significant differences to the properties of asphalt (qv). The block copolymers make the products more flexible, especially at low temperatures, and increase their softening point. They generally decrease the penetration and reduce the tendency to flow at high service temperatures and they also increase the stiffness, tensile strength, ductility, and elastic recovery of the final products. Melt viscosities at processing temperatures remain relatively low so the materials are still easy to apply. As the polymer concentration is increased to about 5%, an interconnected polymer network is formed. At this point the nature of the mixture changes from an asphalt modified by a polymer to a polymer extended with an asphalt.

Acrylic concretes and mortars are used in applications which require fast curing. Acrylic crack-injecting systems are suitable for wet cracks. Products such as adhesives, asphalt modifiers and floor-care polymers find only a small percentage of applications. 

Most processes that incorporate crumb rubber as an asphalt modifier use particles ranging in size from 0.6-0.15 mm... 

Tear-off RS could potentially be used as an asphalt modifier, but tear-off shingle scrap is much more difficult to process because of the presence of contaminants and debris (such as nails, wood, and insulation), which must be removed to prevent equipment damage during size reduction... 

The use of blending GRT with asphalt has been in existence for quite some time. Depending on the type of tire, the composition of GRT may include different rubbers. These crosslinked rubbers are mostly immiscible in bitumen. The blends show an improvement in basic asphalt properties as well as rubberlike characteristics. The blend is thought of as a dispersion of undissolved swollen rubber particles acting as an elastic aggregate within asphalt, modified by the portion of the rubber particles that have dissolved.

The term asphalt binder has been utilised in the Superpave mix design method to classify the grade of asphalt cement used in an asphalt mix based on expected performance under specific environmental conditions and anticipated traffic loading. Asphalt binder according to ASTM D 8 (2013) is an asphalt which may or may not contain an asphalt modifier .
