Elastic aggregates

The use of blending GRT with asphalt has been in existence for quite some time. Depending on the type of tire, the composition of GRT may include different rubbers. These crosslinked rubbers are mostly immiscible in bitumen. The blends show an improvement in basic asphalt properties as well as rubberlike characteristics. The blend is thought of as a dispersion of undissolved swollen rubber particles acting as an elastic aggregate within asphalt, modified by the portion of the rubber particles that have dissolved. [Pg.746]

The interest in vesicles as models for cell biomembranes has led to much work on the interactions within and between lipid layers. The primary contributions to vesicle stability and curvature include those familiar to us already, the electrostatic interactions between charged head groups (Chapter V) and the van der Waals interaction between layers (Chapter VI). An additional force due to thermal fluctuations in membranes produces a steric repulsion between membranes known as the Helfrich or undulation interaction. This force has been quantified by Sackmann and co-workers using reflection interference contrast microscopy to monitor vesicles weakly adhering to a solid substrate [78]. Membrane fluctuation forces may influence the interactions between proteins embedded in them [79]. Finally, in balance with these forces, bending elasticity helps determine shape transitions [80], interactions between inclusions [81], aggregation of membrane junctions [82], and unbinding of pinched membranes [83]. Specific interactions between membrane embedded receptors add an additional complication to biomembrane behavior. These have been stud-... [Pg.549]

It has been shown that inclusion of fine mbber particles in asphalt reduces the cracking of pavement in adverse weather conditions [60,61]. There are two methods for introducing ground waste mbber into asphalt, namely, wet and dry processes. Wet process is carried out at 170°C-220°C for 45-120 min. Rubber particles absorb components with similar value of solubility parameter (5) from the asphalt, causing them to swell. The interaction between mbber and asphalt is mainly of physical nature. In the dry process, mbber is used as a replacement for part of the aggregate and is added to the mineral material before the latter is mixed with the asphalt binder. Addition of mbber greatly improves the elasticity of the binder and generally lowers its brittle point. Incorporation of GRT... [Pg.1048]

The twist of these aggregates determines the resulting structure. When ribbons stack into fibrils, and fibrils into fibres, packing considerations cause these twisted aggregates to bend and modify their twist with an elastic energy penalty8eiast- For fibrils, it can be shown that the afibrii per peptide in a fibril is ... [Pg.39]

Magnesium oxychloride cements are widely used for the fabrication of floors. They find application for this purpose because of their attractive appearance, which resembles marble, and also because of their acoustic and elastic properties and their resistance to the accumulation of static charge. They have also been used for plastering walls, both interior and exterior for exterior walls the cement often includes embedded stone aggregate (Sorrell Armstrong, 1976). However, there have been problems with this latter application, since the base cement has been found to be dimensionally unstable and, in certain circumstances, to release corrosive solutions and show poor weather resistance. [Pg.290]

The empirical results provided by Borrell17 indicate that the price elasticity of aggregate demand for each therapeutic chapter appears to be much higher than time-series and cross-national studies have shown. Thus, price restriction may be a powerful explanatory factor for the large amount of pharmaceuticals consumed per person in Spain. [Pg.219]

Intermolecular crosslinking between pendant vinyl groups and radical centers located on different macromolecules produce crosslinks that are responsible for the aggregation of macromolecules, which leads to the formation of a macrogel. It must be remembered that both normal and multiple crosslinks may contribute to the rubber elasticity of a network, whereas small cycles are wasted links. [Pg.181]

They developed a continuum elastic-free energy model that suggests these observations can be explained as a first-order mechanical phase transition. In other recent work on steroids, Terech and co-workers reported the formation of nanotubes in single-component solutions of the elementary bile steroid derivative lithocholic acid, at alkaline pH,164 although these tubules do not show any chiral markings indicating helical aggregation. [Pg.340]

Elasticity analysis algorithm as pragmatic approach to determine average price elasticity of aggregated demand forecasts that analyzes underlying customer price-quantity demand. [Pg.257]

Contrary to the model with fixed prices and infinitely elastic supply factor, the CGE model proves considerably less sensitive to assumptions about international competitiveness. If the international production structure for hydrogen cars deviates from that of conventional cars, prices and production structures are adjusted. The consequences for aggregate variables, like real consumption and GDP, are small. [Pg.559]
