Asperger’s syndrome

Neuropsychological deficits exist in children with Asperger s syndrome, nonverbal learning dysfunction and other learning disabilities, mental retardation (MR), frontal lobe and temporal lobe dysfunction, and traumatic brain injury (Filley et al., 2001). 

Pervasive developmental disorders, including childhood autism, are described in the ICD-10. Asperger s syndrome (ICD-10) and Asperger disorder (DSM-IV) are likewise included in both diagnostic systems.

A possible interaction of risperidone with tetracycline has been reported in a 15-year-old adolescent with Asperger s syndrome, Tourette s syndrome, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (274). Acute exacerbation of motor and vocal tics occurred when tetracycline 250 mg bd was introduced for acne withdrawal of tetracycline resulted in an improvement in the tics.

A 15-year-old youth with Asperger s syndrome, Tourette s syndrome, and obsessive-compulsive disorder was stabilized on risperidone 1.5 mg bd and sertraline 100 mg od and had marked improvement in his social skills and tics, until he was given tetracycline 250 mg bd for acne. Within 2 weeks his tics were acutely exacerbated with pronounced neck jerking and guttural sounds. The sertraline was increased to 150 mg/day, but the tics did not resolve. The tetracycline was withdrawn after 1 month, and the tics improved within a few weeks.

Presumed lithium-related renal insufficiency occurred in a 13-year-old boy with bipolar disorder, Asperger s syndrome, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, who had taken lithium for over 5 years [51" ]. He had congenital absence of one kidney and previously had one episode of mild lithium toxicity. Kidney biopsy showed membranous glomerulonephropathy, which may have been related to lithium or to another kidney condition. 

Electrolyte A randomised controlled trial of 60 children with autism or Asperger s syndrome (3-11 years old) who received bumetanide (1 mg per day) or placebo for 3 months showed the adverse effect of mild hypokalemia (3.5,3.4, 3.1, 3.5, 3.5 and 3.4 ml ) in six of the bumetanide-treated children, but only one child was removed from the study due to hypokalemia [21].
