Stahmann, K.-P, Revuelta, J.L., and Seulberger, H., Three biotechnical processes using Ashbya gossypii, Candida famata and Bacillus subtilis compete with chemical riboflavin production, Appl. Microbiol. Biotechnol., 53, 509, 2000. [Pg.121]

A number of fungi have a failure of the normal regulation of riboflavin synthesis and are overproducers of the vitamin. Mutants of Ashbya gossypii may accumulate up to 150 /xmol of riboflavin per gram of protein, compared with a normal content of 0.25 /xmol per gram of protein. They can produce and excrete so much that riboflavin crystallizes in the culture medium. Such fungi are used for the commercial production of riboflavin by fermentation, as an alternative to chemical synthesis. [Pg.181]

Added support for the supposition that the biosynthesis of riboflavin and cyanocobalamin make use of a common precursor comes from the increased synthesis of riboflavin by Ashbya gossypii in cobalt-supplemented media (Hickey, 1954) and from the stimulation of riboflavin formation in a Saccharomyces cerevisiae mutant by purines, glycine, and methionine (Giri and Krishnswamy, 1964). [Pg.123]

Late in the 1960s, concurrently with the development of the riboflavin fermentation process, a synthetic means of producing riboflavin was discovered. This synthetic process dominated the production of riboflavin until 1972 when some major fermentation strain and process improvements were made with the Ashbya gossypii strain. Since then yields have been significantly improved. The fermentation method now accounts for essentially all the riboflavin produced. [Pg.960]
