Acryhcs and modacryhcs are also useflil industrial fibers. Fibers low in comonomer content, such as Dolan 10 and Du Font s PAN Type A, have exceptional resistance to chemicals and very good dimensional stabihty under hot—wet conditions. These fibers are useflil in industrial filters, battery separators, asbestos fiber replacement, hospital cubical curtains, office room dividers, uniform fabrics, and carbon fiber precursors. The exceUent resistance of acryhc fibers to sunlight also makes them highly suitable for outdoor use. Typical apphcations include modacryhcs, awnings, sandbags, tents, tarpauhns, covers for boats and swimming pools, cabanas, and duck for outdoor furniture (59). [Pg.283]

Pulp-like olefin fibers are produced by a high pressure spurting process developed by Hercules Inc. and Solvay, Inc. Polypropylene or polyethylene is dissolved in volatile solvents at high temperature and pressure. After the solution is released, the solvent is volatilised, and the polymer expands into a highly fluffed, pulp-like product. Additives are included to modify the surface characteristics of the pulp. Uses include felted fabrics, substitution in whole or in part for wood pulp in papermaking, and replacement of asbestos in reinforcing appHcations (56). [Pg.320]

PBI is being marketed as a replacement for asbestos and as a high temperature filtration fabric with exceUent textile apparel properties. The synthesis of whoUy aromatic polybenzimidazoles with improved thermal stabUities was reported in 1961 (12). The Non-MetaUic Materials and Manufacturing Technology Division of the U.S. Air Force Materials Laboratory, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, awarded a contract to the Narmco Research and Development Division of the Whittaker Corp. for development of these materials into high temperature adhesives and laminates. [Pg.67]

The 1980s saw the removal of large quantities of asbestos (qv) from buildings, creating the need for clothing which could not be penetrated by small asbestos fibrils, yet was iaexpensive enough to permit daily disposal. Certain spunbonded and spunbond/meltblown laminate fabrics demonstrate excellent resistance to asbestos penetration from particles as small as 0.5 p.m (70). [Pg.174]

Asbestos fibers have also been widely used for the fabrication of papers and felts for flooring and roofing products, pipeline wrapping, electrical insulation, etc. Asbestos textiles, comprising yam, thread, cloth, tape, or tope, also found wide apphcation in thermal and electrical insulation, friction products in brake or clutch pads, etc. In recent years, some of these appHcations have decreased to various extents, although others remain fairly active, typically in friction materials. [Pg.354]
