Artificial mustard oil

Allyl isothiocyanate, CHj CH. CH N C S, also known as artificial mustard oil, is the principal constituent of natural oil of mustard. This body results from the hydrolysis of the glucoside sinigrin under the influence of the ferment myrosin, according to the equation—... [Pg.293]

Potassium thiocyanate is used in dyeing and printing textiles to make artificial mustard oil as a slimicide in paper production for controlling microbial growth in cooling water and in the preparation of organic thiocyanates. The salt also is used in analytical chemistry in Volhard titration. [Pg.776]

After strawberries no other crops should be grown for at least 3-4 years or, if there has been infection with red root rot (Phytophthora fragariae), at least 15 years. To allow sufficient time for careful preparation of the bed where the strawberries are to be planted, the previous crop should be removed 4-6 weeks before planting. Suitable previous crops are 1-year artificial meadows, oil radish, rapeseed, mustard, buckwheat, winter cereals or vegetables (except Fabaceae). Previous crops that are unsuitable are natural meadows which have been turned over less than 3 years ago (because of weeds, white grubs, wireworms and nematodes), potatoes and tomatoes (because of Rhizoctonia and Verticillium sp.), phacelia (because of rhizome rot) and weed-infested crops. [Pg.70]

Products and Uses Applications include baked goods, condiments, horseradish flavor (imitation), meat, mustard oil (artificial), pickles, salad dressings, and sauces as a flavoring agent. Also found in mustard plasters and over-the-counter medications and in fumigants. [Pg.40]

The chief product of the reaction is thus allyl iso-thiocyanate (allyl thiocarbimide), a pungent and disagreeable liquid. A small quantity of the normal allyl thiocyanate is also formed, tc ther with traces of tdlyl cyanide and carbon disulphide. As mustard oU consists almost entirely of allyl iso-thiocyanate, and the latter body is easily prepared artificially, there is an artificial oil on the market. This is made by distilling allyl iodide or bromide with alcoholic solution of potassium thiocyanate— a molecular rearrangement to the iso-thioej anic radicle taking place. Thus—... [Pg.495]
