Public Comment on an MRL Based on Other Endpoints. One public comment suggested that ATSDR consider basing its chronic oral MRL on the reproductive and developmental effects observed in an animal study by Arnold (Arnold et al. 1995). The Submitter argued that the results of this study suggest an MRL of 0.5 pg/kg/day. None of the panelists advocated the use of this MRL, presumably because the MRLs based on the studies discussed in Sections 3.7.1 and 3.7.2 are both considerably lower than the MRL derived using the Arnold study.

Sommerfeld, well-known professor of theoretical physics in the University of Munich, Germany, was an expert on an early form of quantum mechanics, the Bohr-Sommerfeld atomic model. The picture was taken on the occasion of Sommerfeld s visit to Caltech in 1928. Pauling studied quantum mechanics with Sommerfeld in 1926—1927, which is where Pauling got his start in the application of quantum mechanics to chemical bonding (Chapter 1) and to the calculation of molecular properties (Chapter 8). 

On the other hand, clinical and laboratory studies in humans have demonstrated the development of tolerance to the amnestic and analgesic effects of nitrous oxide and isoflurane (see Arnold et al. 1993 Avramov et al. 1990 Rupreht et al. 1985 Whitwam et al. 1976) and, in the case of ether or chloroform, to its reinforcing effects (Krenz et al. 2003). No studies have shown the development of tolerance to the reinforcing effects of nitrous oxide. 

Arnold M. Guloy was born in Manila, in the Philippines. After graduation from Manila Science High School, he studied chemistry and received his BS degree at the University of the Philippines, Quezon City. He received his Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry from Iowa State University under the supervision of Professor John D. Corbett in 1992. After an IBM Postdoctoral fellowship at the IBM Research Center at York-town Heights, he joined the faculty at the University of Houston in 1994, where he is currently an Associate Professor. Claims for acute hydrogen sulfide exposure that occurred over a 5-year period (1969-1973) in Alberta, Canada, primarily among petrochemical workers, were reviewed by Burnett et al. (1977). Acute effects noted included coma, disequilibrium, and respiratory insufficiency with pulmonary edema. Of 221 cases, there were 14 deaths. A follow-up study of 250 workers claims for hydrogen sulfide exposure from 1979 to 1983 in Alberta, Canada, found 7 fatalities that usually involved the central nervous and respiratory systems hepatic congestion and cardiac petechiae were also noted (Arnold et al. 1985). The difference in fatality rate (6% down to 2.8%) was attributed to improved first aid training and an increased awareness of the dangers of hydrogen sulfide.
