Areas of Needed Basic Research

The chemistry of waste treatment processes and the development of new processes are fertile areas of research work. The speciation of plutonium in basic and laundry wastes is needed. For example, if soluble plutonium complexes in basic wastes can be destroyed, perhaps ultrafiltration could replace the flocculent-carrier precipitation process. The chemistry of plutonium(VII) and of ferrites—a candidate waste treatment process—needs to be explored.(23)... 

I have emphasized to this point the need for research in all the basic areas of allelopathy. Such work could open up new horizons for applied research in the field of allelopathy in fact, the results form the foundation of the entire field. This emphasis on basic research should in no way detract from the value and need for more progress In the various applied areas of allelopathy. In reality, only a relatively small amount of research has been carried out concerning the roles of allelopathy In natural or any of the manmade or man-altered ecosystems. Only a few of the more obvious areas in need of attention will be mentioned here. 

Finally, there are no systematic differences in the aging mechanisms of linear and network polymers. What is different is essentially (i) the degree of difficulty of analytical studies, especially determinations of the crosslink density and (ii) the lack of theories (in thermosets) linking the network structure to properties, especially ultimate mechanical properties. There is a need for basic research in this area to reach a full understanding of aging effects on use (especially fracture) properties.
