Adult patients without xanthomas therefore usually have lower cholesterol levels than younger patients with xanthomas. This is illustrated by adolescent patients of Epstein et al. (1959) (A 17 plasma cholesterol 1033 mg per 100 ml, died aged 13, xanthomas since age 5), of Schettler (1960) (two siblings with xanthomas at age 4 and 6, plasma cholesterol levels 860 and 940 mg per 100 ml respectively, sudden cardiac deaths at the ages of 6 and 8, respectively), of Debuch and Kahlke (1964) (plasma cholesterol levels 800—900 mg%, xanthomas when 10 and 12 years old), and of Piper and Orrild (1956) (xanthomas when 19 years old, cholesterol values between 601 and 650 mg per 100 ml). [Pg.417]

The finding of corneal arcus in adolescents and younger adults should always be considered suggestive of EFH or other disturbances of lipid metabolism. In higher age groups it is a frequent finding. Rohrschneider (1960) reported from biomicroscopic examinations of the cornea of 400 patients at the Munich Eye Clinic a prevalence of 80% in persons between 50 and 60 years, and of 90% in the 7th decade. [Pg.417]

Arcus and co-workers94 studied alkaline hydrolyses of neutral and anionic aliphatic esters in the presence of poly (vinylbenzyltriethylammonium hydroxide), 42 (PVBzTEA), as a catalyst. Baumgartner and associate95 also found enhanced alkaline hydrolyses of 43 (aspirin, anionic substrate), in the presence of 42 (PVBzTEA), in alkaline pH regions. [Pg.157]

Arcus gasification combuster is described and the principles upon which it works are explained. This combuster combines solid fuel gasification with the burning of the lean gases produced on a small capacity scale. The types of solid fuels which can be used are listed and these include segregated municipal waste and industrial waste such as rigid PU foam and plastics mixed with other materials. Uses of the gas produced are included. [Pg.102]

Patients with genetic disorders that cause a marked increase in serum LDL cholesterol (greater than 250 mg/dL [6.48 mmol/L]) may present with corneal arcus of the eye and xanthomas of extensor tendons of the hand and Achilles tendon. [Pg.181]

Oliveberg M, Arcus VL, Fersht AR (1995) pKa values of carboxyl groups in the native and denatured states of bamase The pKa values of the denatured state are on average 0.4 units lower than those of model compounds. Biochemistry 34 9424—9433. [Pg.282]

Novolac resins, as the oldest synthetic polymers, have played an important role 1n microelectronic Industry as positive photoresists. Studies of novolac dissolution have populated the literature a recent survey shows that the rate of dissolution 1s influenced by the concentration of the alkali, size of the cation, addition of salt, and the presence of dissolution Inhibitors (1-6). The voluminous experimental results, however, have not led to a clear understanding of the dissolution phenomena. Arcus (3) proposed an 1on-permeab1e membrane" model while Szmanda (1) and Hanabata (6) emphasized the Importance of secondary structures of novolac molecules, for Instance, Inter- or Intramolecular hydrogen bonding and the various isomeric configurations of the resins. These important contributions nevertheless point to a need for additional studies of the mechanism of dissolution. [Pg.364]

Cation Size. In their early studies, Hlnsberg (1) and Arcus (3) found that dissolution rates of resists decreased as the size of the cation of the base Increased. Our results support their conclusion. In Figure 5, the dissolution rates of a PMPS(10X)/p-N02-PHMP film 1n different alkali solutions clearly show a decreasing trend with increasing cation size. In fact, the rate 1s Inversely proportional to the cross-sectional area of the unhydrated cation (Figure 6). It is known 1n the diffusion of small molecules 1n polymers, the diffusion constant is Inversely related to the size of the molecule (IS). The observed dependence of dissolution rate on cation size 1s therefore suggestive of cation diffusion as a crucial step. It is... [Pg.370]
